In honor of Aging Life Care® Month, here are our responses to a few myths about Aging Life Care Managers®.
Aging Life Care Managers® take away senior’s independence.
Actually, we work to do just the opposite! Our goal is to help our clients live in as least restrictive environment as possible. We work to make our clients care wishes a reality, whether that’s aging at home or the more social environment that assisted living provides. In any living situation, we act as advocates for our clients wishes, ensuring that their voice is heard and respected.
You only need to start working with Aging Life Care Managers® after there’s an emergency.
Working with a care manager before a medical emergency is the best way to reduce stress for seniors and caregivers alike. As part of our personalized care plans, we make plans in case of emergency. This allows us to gather relevant medical information, get to know the client’s situation, and understand the client’s care wishes without the pressure of a stressful emergency situation. With the proper preparation, we can better serve as advocates and coordinators for our clients during emergencies.
Family caregivers don’t need another opinion to decide care.
It’s true that too many opinions can make life difficult for families looking to make decisions for their aging loved ones. However, aging care is often uncharted territory for families. Our Aging Life Care Managers® don’t just offer one more medical opinion. We look at a client’s aging care as a whole, taking into account physical, emotional, and mental health, as well as the client’s wishes for their future. We bring our years of experience helping seniors navigate aging and an extensive knowledge of local resources to give our clients recommendations that they can trust.
Aging Life Care Managers® are the same thing as case managers.
Though they have similar titles, case managers and care managers play very different roles for seniors. Case managers typically focus on short-term, immediate needs such as coordinating hospital discharges, while care managers provide ongoing, personalized support that addresses the broader, long-term needs associated with aging or chronic conditions.
Aging Life Care Managers® benefit from recommending services.
As certified members of the Aging Life Care® Association, we are held to a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. As part of this, we agree not to accept “referral fees, fee splitting, kickbacks, or other similar arrangements in exchange for client referrals.” This guarantees that all of our recommendations for services come solely from our honest opinion on which services will provide the best quality care for our clients.
